Afghan Presidential Election: EU congratulates Karzai on second term

The European Union welcomes the conclusion of the presidential electoral process and congratulates President Hamid Karzai on a second term in office.

A credible and competent government, promoting national unity, must now be formed without delay. The European Union emphasises the need for President Karzai's new government to swiftly develop a comprehensive agenda on the challenges facing the nation, especially on governance, the fight against corruption and security.

The European Union is ready to engage early and substantially with the new government, on the basis of its recently adopted action plan.

The European Union stresses the need to use lessons learned from this election in reviewing and improving the electoral process before the next elections.
