EU Presidency Statement after Adoption of Resolution - United Nations: Causes of conflict and the promotion of durable peace and sustainable development in Africa

Sommaire: 23 July 2009, New York - Statement after adoption of resolution on behalf of the European Union by H.E. Mr. Anders Lidén, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sweden, "Causes of conflict and the promotion of durable peace and sustainable development in Africa"

Mr President,

I have the honour to speak on behalf of the European Union.

The European Union actively supports the African Union and the African agenda for peace and development. We are fully and unambiguously committed to stand by the African continent, as demonstrated by the adoption of the Joint EU-Africa Strategy in Lisboa in December 2007. Today the implementation of that strategy is actively pursued in all areas.

The search for peace on the African continent is one of the European Union's priorities. Within the framework of the African Peace Facility, the European Union has committed an additional €300 million for the period from 2008 to 2010. Furthermore, the European Union currently has four missions deployed on the African continent as part of the European Security and Defence Policy. Also, the European Union is Africa's principal development partner.

Mr President,

The European Union welcomes the adoption today of the resolution on Causes of conflict and the promotion of durable peace and sustainable development in Africa. Rwanda and Srebrenica demonstrate that Africa and Europe both have an interest in the concept of responsibility to protect. We look forward to the debate on that concept which is to follow. We also look forward to working with Africa on how to strengthen our capacity in this regard.

I thank you.
