EUHR Solana to address UN Security Council on EUFOR Tchad/RCA - 24 September

Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, will address the UN Security Council from 14.30 to 16.00 on Wednesday, 24 September 2008 in order to present the EU's mid-term review of its EUFOR operation in Eastern Chad and North Eastern Central African Republic.

EU troops have been deployed there since March this year, under UN Resolution 1778, to help protect refugees and displaced persons affected by the crisis in Darfur. This operation is a military bridging operation deployed for twelve months and closely coordinated with the United Nations presence deployed in the region to improve security there. The EU operation also facilitates the delivery of humanitarian aid and contributes to protecting UN personnel and facilities, ensuring that they can move around freely and safely.
