EUHR Solana met President of Timor Leste Ramos-Horta

Sommaire: 22 July 2008, Brussels - Javier SOLANA, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), today met José RAMOS-HORTA, President of Timor Leste.

The High Representative and President RAMOS-HORTA had the opportunity to discuss the internal situation in Timor Leste. Mr SOLANA was pleased to hear about the progress that has taken place since last elections in 2007 and the gradual stability that has been achieved in the internal political situation. Despite the economic and financial challenges and the rise of food prices, the High Representative praised the efforts of the government in continuing economic development, in particular in the agricultural sector.

Mr SOLANA and President RAMOS-HORTA further discussed the situation in the wider region. The High Representative expressed EU's support for the South-Eastern Asia integration process as a contribution to enhance security and stability in the region. At this point, Mr SOLANA praised the role that is being played by Timor Leste in this process.

The High Representative and President RAMOS-HORTA also discussed the situation in Burma/Myanmar. Mr SOLANA underlined the key role of ASEAN in pressing the Burmese authorities moving forward with the political process.

Mr SOLANA was delighted to see the recovery of Mr RAMOS-HORTA after the assassination attempt five months ago and reiterated the EU's full support for the leadership of Timor Leste.
