Sommaire: 22 July 2008, Brussels - Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) welcomed today the arrest of Radovan KARADZIC by the Serb authorities. He made the following statement to representatives of the press:
"I think the arrest of Radovan Karadzic is very good news. It is very important that somebody like Radovan Karadzic will be in front of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) having a fair trial.
Considering that the presidential and the parliamentary elections in Serbia took place not long ago, I think that the Serb authorities have proven that they will cooperate fully with the international tribunal and that is something I welcome very much.
We now have to talk to the international tribunal and to the prosecutor to see how he evaluates the situation but I am almost certain that he is going to say there is full cooperation. I hope very much that the willingness shown by the Serbian government to work with the ICTY will allow the prosecutor to say that the cooperation is going in the right direction.
We also have to remember today the many victims of those days in the Balkans and Karadzic was probably responsible for some of these atrocities.
Today I want to congratulate the Serbian government. It is a good day for the Balkans and for reconciliation in the Balkans, to have Radovan Karadzic standing trial".
