Sommaire: 8 July 2008, Brussels - Javier Solana, the EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, issued a statement today following the incidents in South Ossetia and Abkhazia over the last few days in which several people were killed:
"I am seriously concerned about the deteriorating situation in the conflict regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in Georgia. A series of bomb attacks and exchange of fire have resulted in several casualties and raised tension in conflict regions to a dangerously high level.
I call on the parties to show restraint and to take steps to restore confidence, in co-operation with the UN and the OSCE. A peaceful, sustainable solution to the conflicts can only be found through dialogue. I have sent the EU Special Representative, Peter Semneby, to Georgia in an effort to calm the situation. The EU will continue to closely follow developments."
