Statement by EU Commissioner Louis Michel on the nomination of Raul Castro as new President of Cuba

Sommaire: 25 February 2008 , Brussels - Louis Michel, European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, takes note of the nomination of Raul Castro as President of the Council of Ministers and President of the Council of State of Cuba.

Commissioner Michel stated his willingness to engage in a constructive political dialogue with Raul Castro as the new President of Cuba and successor to Fidel Castro.

The European Commission stands ready to continue working with the Cuban Government, in coordination with our European Union partners, to improve and deepen cooperation issues of common interest such as the environment and climate change. The objectives of this process remain those of the EU's Common Position and are consistent with the EU's policy of constructive engagement towards Cuba.

Commissioner Michel believes that his upcoming visit to Cuba on 6-7 March 2008 offers an opportunity to advance the European Union's dialogue process with the Cuban Government.
