Sommaire: 21 Febraury 2008, Brussels - This morning Commissioner Louis Michel met a Chadian delegation led by Mr Ahmat Allam-Mi, Minister for Foreign Affairs and African Integration. At their meeting they reviewed the internal situation following recent attempts by armed rebels to overthrow the government.
The Commissioner renewed his strong condemnation of the attack and expressed concern over the repercussions that the crisis could have on the internal political situation.
The Commissioner believed it was necessary to preserve the scope for dialogue created following the Political Accord of 13 August 2007 and that it was essential to pursue the effort to put it into effect in order to secure the country's long-term stability.
He said: "It is absolutely vital to restore as quickly as possible the climate of confidence that politicians from all sides had managed to establish with one another in recent months in the country. We are ready to facilitate and support this process".
At the same time, the Commissioner asked the Chad authorities to shed all possible light on the cases of political opponents arbitrarily arrested in recent days and called for them to be released. He also urged that the state of emergency be applied in strictest observance of the rule of law, human rights and fundamental liberties.
Yesterday the European Commission's representative in Ndjamena was able to visit Mr Lol Mahamat Choua, Chairman of the Follow-up and Support Committee for Inter-Chadian Dialogue, and found him in good health.
On 1 February the European Commission condemned the attempt by rebel movements supported by Sudan to seize power by force. It also acted very swiftly after events began to unfold in Chad, releasing a budget of €2 million in humanitarian aid for Chadian refugees in Cameroon.
