
Sommaire: EU Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner to attend UN General Assembly (18 September 2006: Brussels)
European Commissioner for External Relations and Neighbourhood Policy, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, will travel to New York from 18-22 September to attend the UN General Assembly (UNGA). In the margins of UNGA she will attend many EU meetings with international partners and hold bilateral talks with foreign ministers from around the world. Developments in the Middle East will be a major focus of her activities: she will attend the meeting of the Middle East Quartet on Wednesday 20th
September and hold bilateral meetings with leaders including the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, the Egyptian Minister for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdellah Al-Khativ and the Arab League Secretary General Amre Moussa.
The Commissioner will participate in three meetings with representatives of the Iraqi government: the Iraq Ministerial Meeting convened by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on Monday 18th September and the EU Iraq Foreign Ministers' Troika on 21st September, and she will hold bilateral talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iraq Hoshyar Zebari.
Her meetings on Latin America will include the EU-Rio Group Troika meeting and bilateral meetings with the Secretary General of the Organisation of American States José Miguel Insulza, the Secretary General of the Iberoamerican Summit Enrique Iglesias, and Colombian Minister of Foreign Affairs Consuelo Araujo.
EU Troika meetings, in which she will participate, include: EU-Organisation of Islamic Countries (20/9), EU-Japan (21/9), EU-Non-Aligned Movement (21/9), EU-Gulf Co-operation Council (21/9), EU-UN Secretary General Kofi Annan (21/9), and EU-China (22/9).
Meetings held in the presence of all EU Foreign Ministers include: the EU Foreign Ministers Meeting (19/9), EU Ministerial meetings with Russia (22/9), and with the USA (22/9).
She will also participate in the meeting of the G8 Foreign Ministers (22/9).
While in New York Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner will also hold bilateral meetings, inter alia, with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Australia, Alexander Downer, New Zealand Minister for Foreign Affairs Winston Peters, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka Mangela Samaraweera, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kirghizstan Alikbek Jekshenkulov and the Yemeni Foreign Minister Abubakr Al-Qirbi.
