EUHR Solana met with the Prime Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina

Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), met today with Adnan Terzic, Prime Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the latest developments in EU-Bosnia and Herzegovina relations.

The High Representative complimented Prime Minister Terzic on his leadership and handling of the recent political turbulence of recent weeks, enabling the Council of Ministers to continue to work and process critical legislation.

Both leaders noted the successful start of the EU military operation EUFOR / ALTHEA, as part of a comprehensive EU approach to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Excellent cooperation existed with the BiH authorities.

The meeting noted the recent report of the Police Restructuring Commission (PRC) in BiH. The High Representative emphasised that significant progress in police restructuring, in line with PRC Chairman Marten's Report, was essential for further movement towards the EU. This was important both for Bosnia and Herzegovina's fight against organised crime and for its aspirations to move towards visa liberalisation.

Mr Solana reiterated that full cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), in particular by the Republika Srpska, remained a fundamental requirement for BiH 's progress towards the EU. The High Representative welcomed a new initiative by Prime Minister Terzic and EU Special Representative Lord Ashdown to launch an ICTY Monitoring Mechanism, compromising relevant BiH authorities and key international partners.
