Sommaire: May 10, 2002: Statement by the Presidency of the European Union at the 57th Session of the UN ECE (Economic Commission for Europe) on Agenda item 8.2: European preparation for the UN ECE Ministerial Conference on Ageing (May 7-10, 2002), (Geneva)
On behalf of the EU, thank you Mr. Chairman for allowing us to discuss this important issue today as we asked for this morning.
After the outset of our considerations we would like to briefly mention the framework in which the discussions on ageing take place this year. The agreements reached in the II World Assembly in Madrid concern us all; the Spanish delegation will comment sententiously on this issue. We are also engaged on the preparation of the Berlin Regional Conference and the German delegation will also comment on that; last week we made very good progress towards a regional consensus text. We encourage other
countries in the region to participate actively in this process.
