Sommaire: May 21, 2002: Statement by Mr. Daniel Soto on behalf of the European Union on the financing of Untaet/Unmiset (New York)
Thank you, Mr. Chairman,
I have the honour to speak on behalf of the European Union. The countries of Central and Eastern Europe associated with the European Union, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, the associated countries, Cyprus, Malta, and Turkey, and the EFTA countries belonging to the European Economic Area, Iceland and Liechtenstein, align themselves with this statement.
The EU would like to thank the Comptroller, Mr. Jean-Pierre Halbwachs for the introduction of SG reports on the financing of UNTAET and UNMISET. Our thanks also to Ambassador Mslle for introducing the reports of the ACABQ thereon.
Mr. Chairman, I will be very brief: as we are seized today of the reports pertaining to the financing of a new Mission, UNMISET, as it happens on the day following the independence of East Timor, the EU finds it is only fitting that we congratulate ourselves for the unqualified and, in light of its complex mandate, unprecedented success story for UN peacekeeping that was UNTAET.
The UN still has a job to finish in East Timor. We affirm our support for UNMISET and, in so doing, concur with the SG's budget proposals and with the recommendations of the ACABQ.
Thank you Mr. Chairman.
