In Madrid today, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Igor Ivanov, US Secretary of State Colin Powell, Spanish Foreign Affairs Minister Josep Piqué and High Representative for EU Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana agreed to coordinate their actions to help resolve the current crisis in the Middle East. The Quartet issued a detailed statement calling on the leaders of Israel and the Palestinian Authority to immediately halt their senseless confrontation. European External Relations Commissioner Chris Patten gave full support for UN Secretary General Kofi Annan http://www.eu-un.europa.eu/articles/en/article_1282_en.htm and presented a full report on the Middle East situation yesterday to the European Parliament. http://www.eu-un.europa.eu/articles/en/article_1280_en.htm The European Commission issued details of its humanitarian work in the Palestinian Territories http://www.eu-un.europa.eu/articles/en/article_1274_en.htm and gave an additional EUR 5 million food aid http://www.eu-un.europa.eu/articles/en/article_1286_en.htm This followed statements by both EC President Romano Prodi and Commissioner Poul Nielson http://www.eu-un.europa.eu/articles/en/article_1277_en.htm on the deteriorating situation. The European Commission also approved continued budgetary support of EUR 50 million for the Palestinian Authority http://www.eu-un.europa.eu/articles/en/article_1283_en.htm
The European Union issued a communiqué in anticipation of the special event on 11th April when the 60 ratifications or accessions necessary for the entry into force of the Rome Statute for the International Criminal Court will be attained. The EU has been a major driving force behind this Statute which will mark a watershed in the work of the Preparatory Commission and the development of international law http://www.eu-un.europa.eu/articles/en/article_1273_en.htm It has also recognized the critical role played by NGOs in the process.

This includes a commitment to create the opportunities for older people to stay at work for, on average, up to 5 years longer than today. At the same time, there will be greater emphasis on the skills, training and jobs needs of older workers.
