Sommaire: March 5, 2002: Weekly Highlights

Welcome to the official e-mail alert service of the European Union at the United Nations. For a summary of the latest news on our website please click here.

* EU High Representative Javier Solana said at today's UN Security Council debate on Bosnia and Herzegovina that the transition from the International Police Task Force to the EU police mission is a concrete example of the kind of cooperation that is now feasible and desirable between the UN and the EU. In total, the European Union has provided more than 3 billion Euro in financial assistance to BiH since 1991. For further details of his statement please click here

* The EU took the decision yesterday to ratify the Kyoto Protocol at the EU level. This will help the EU stay true to its ambition to enable the Kyoto Protocol to come into force by the World Summit on Sustainable Development in August/September 2002. The decision also makes the EU Member States' greenhouse gas reduction commitments agreed in June 1998 legally binding. For more details please click here. European Commissioner Wallstrom's detailed speech on the subject of globalisation and sustainability can also be read here.

* In a statement to the Security Council on the Middle East, including the Palestinian question, the EU issued a firm call to the parties to adopt all necessary measures to immediately and unconditionally implement the Tenet cease-fire Plan and the Mitchell Committee recommendations. For full details, please click here.

* The European Union expressed its deep concern about the attack on a UN food distribution centre in southern Sudan and called on the government of Sudan to urgently uphold its agreements with the UN on the humanitarian operation in Sudan. For the full statement please click here.

* In a response to a New York Times article, the European Commission said that the EU's contribution to UNHCR's budget has been in the range of 40-50% in recent years and will remain so. Although a valued partner, UNHCR did not have a monopoly on EU humanitarian funding, much of which also went via Non-Governmental Organisations and the Red Cross. For more information, please click here.

* The EU warned at the Second Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests, that the need for implementing international agreements is even more urgent since the recent estimates in the FAO`s latest Report on the State of World's Forest show that forest loss and degradation is continuing at a fast rate.
