EU Presidency Declaration on Angola

Sumario: 10 September 2008, Brussels - Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on Angola

The European Union closely followed the general elections held in Angola on 5 and 6 September 2008.

The European Observation Mission welcomed the progress made by Angola towards democracy, the size of the turnout and the calm which reigned during the electoral process, despite logistical and procedural difficulties.

The European Union welcomes the fact that the elections were held peacefully and congratulates all those active on the Angolan political scene for their resolute and responsible action to this end, despite the organisational problems noted. The broad mobilisation of Angolan citizens bears witness to the importance they attached to this poll.

These elections are an historic event for Angola, sixteen years after the last poll. The European Union calls on the Angolan authorities to continue to make progress towards democracy and to consolidate peace.

The Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, Armenia and Georgia align themselves with this declaration.
