EU Presidency Statement on the situation in Mauritania

Sumario: 28 August 2008, Brussels - Statement by the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on the situation in Mauritania

Following the meeting in Paris on 27 August with Alain Joyandet, Minister of State for Cooperation and the Francophonie, Jean Ping, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, and Ramtane Lamamra, African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security, on their return from their mission in Mauritania, the Presidency of the Council of the European Union expresses its support for the African Union's efforts to settle the crisis, which we hope will be accomplished swiftly.

The Presidency of the Council of the European Union renews its call for a return to constitutional order and the reinstatement of President Abdallahi in his functions.

The international community will act accordingly if the military junta does not make any gestures showing its willingness to work with the African Union to restore democracy at the earliest opportunity.
