Sumario: 18 August 2008, Brussels - Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), issued a statement today welcoming the transfer of the western zone of the Bakassi peninsular from Nigeria to Cameroon on 14 August, in accordance with the Green Tree Agreement of 12 August 2006, which followed the judgment of the International Court of Justice of 10 October 2002. This transfer completes the handover exercise begun in 2006.
Mr SOLANA pointed to the exemplary and courageous nature of the process, stressing that it was a credit to both countries, Nigeria and Cameroon, which had decided to find a peaceful solution to their territorial dispute. He also underlined the engagement of the United Nations in the implementation of the Green Tree Agreement.
