Sumario: 25 July 2008, New York - Statement by the French Presidency on behalf of the European Union at the United Nations Economic and Social Council Substantive session, General Segment, Item 6 (b): Implementation of and follow-up to major UN conferences and summits: review and coordination of the implementation of the Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries for the Decade 2001-2010
M. Chairman,
I have the honour to speak on behalf of the EU.
The EU would like to thank the President of ECOSOC, the facilitator M. Fredrick Matwang'a and all ECOSOC's partners for the very constructive spirit of the negotiations on the Implementation of the Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries for the Decade 2001-2010.
The EU would like to take the opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to the implementation of the Brussels Programme of Action and to stress that it has been and continues to be one of the most important supporters of the LDC category. In this respect, the EU reaffirms the importance of each and every one of the seven commitments taken to fully implement the Programme of Action approved in Brussels, in May 2001.
Despite the progress achieved in the implementation of these commitments, in particular in the fields of economic growth and human development, we note with concerns that extreme poverty continues to remain high in the LDCs and that malnutrition seems to be worsening, particularly among children and women. We also note the lower progress and even decline on the goals for gender equality in education, and the absence of progress on maternal mortality. The resolution accurately stresses the
important linkages between development, poverty reduction and gender equality.
The European Union finally considers the holding of a fourth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries towards the end of the current decade as a great opportunity for all development partners to make a comprehensive appraisal of the implementation of the Brussels Programme of Action and to decide on subsequent action. It looks forward to considering the note outlining the modalities of such a Conference, including its preparatory process, that has been requested by the General
Assembly in its resolution 62/203 and is being prepared by the Secretary General.
