Pakistan: EU Presidency Declaration on execution of two condemned men

Sumario: 11 August 2008, Brussels - The European Union is deeply concerned at the news of the execution of two condemned men in Pakistan on 31 July. It is firmly committed to the universal abolition of the death penalty, and categorically condemns its application.

The European Union reaffirms its opposition to the death penalty in all circumstances and believes that respect for human dignity and human rights makes its abolition imperative. The Union points out that the deterrent effect of this penalty is not proven and that its application makes judicial mistakes irreparable.

The European Union urges Pakistan to put an immediate end to executions and to introduce a moratorium with a view to abolishing the death penalty, in accordance with United Nations General Assembly resolution 62/149 on a moratorium on the use of the death penalty, adopted last December.
