French Presidency of the EU: Message of Welcome from Ambassador Jean-Maurice Ripert, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations in New York

Sumario: 5 August 2008, New York - Message of Welcome from Ambassador Jean-Maurice Ripert, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations in New York, on behalf of the French Presidency of the European Union

Welcome to the website of the European Union to the United Nations.

Since 1 July, France has taken over the EU Presidency from Slovenia and has the honour of representing 42 countries at the General Assembly-27 Member States supported by 15 candidate countries. In six months, France will pass the baton to the Czech Republic, with which we have defined an 18-month work programme that also includes Sweden.

The UN is of paramount importance to the world, just as the European Union is vital to the United Nations. Through its Member States, Europe is an active member of the United Nations. For example, collectively, Europe is the largest contributor to the UN budget and the biggest contributor of UN peacekeepers to peace support operations.

The French President wants this Presidency to be as beneficial as possible by responding to the real worries of Europeans, in particular as regards the climate and energy challenges, migration, agriculture and food security issues, along with defence and security.

Beyond these four main priorities, emphasis must be placed on the significance and diplomatic success of the Barcelona Process and the Union for the Mediterranean, whose inaugural summit, co-chaired by France and Egypt, took place in Paris on 13 July.

Finally, in the year in which we mark the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Mission intends to vigorously defend and promote the fundamental values of France and the EU throughout the world, beginning with the protection of our indivisible and universal Human Rights.

Here in New York, we hope that this Presidency will be as effective as it is determined to succeed, because Europe's future is also our very future.

I, along with all Mission staff, hope you enjoy your visit to our website.

Kind regards,

Jean-Maurice Ripert
Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations in New York
