
Sumario: 15 July 2008, Brussels - The European Union has taken note of the statements made by the prosecutor of the ICC concerning the crimes committed in Darfur.
It is now up to the judges of the Pre-Trial Chamber of the ICC to determine what action they intend to take in response to the request issued by the prosecutor.
The European Union recalls that the ICC plays a fundamental role in the promotion of international justice. The EU reiterates in particular its call for the arrest warrants issued by the Court against Mr Ahmed Harun and Mr Ali Kushayb to be executed.
The European Union reaffirms the strategic importance of the search for a political solution in Darfur and of the implementation of the North-South peace agreement (CPA). It calls on the Sudanese Government of National Unity and all parties, groups and movements in Darfur to work towards those objectives, in the interests of the population of Sudan and the stability of the country and the region.
The European Union reaffirms its willingness to support the peace efforts in Darfur.
The Candidate Countries Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, Armenia and Georgia align themselves with this declaration.
* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
