EU Commissioner Michel encouraged by positive talks with Cuban government

Sumario: 10 March 2008, Brussels- Louis Michel, European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, has described his meetings with Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Pérez Roque as "positive and encouraging".

The meetings between Commissioner Michel and Mr. Roque aimed to be a first step to contribute to the normalisation of the EU relationship with Cuba.

Speaking at the start of the second day of his visit, Commissioner Michel said, "Our meeting was positive and encouraging. I have come to Havana to seek a constructive dialogue with the Cuban authorities and so I am pleased that together we were able to have a dialogue on a range of topics of mutual interest, including human rights but also on issues such as climate change or the environment. All these issues deserve our attention."

Commissioner Michel underlined that the time was right for a constructive engagement through open and reciprocal political dialogue with President Raúl Castro and his government.

On his first day in Havana, Commissioner Michel also had meetings with the Minister for Foreign Investment and Cooperation Marta Lomas and President of the National Assembly Ricardo Alarcón de Quesada.

These meetings were a first step in identifying areas of mutual interest, such as development programmes, the protection of the environment or climate change, where the perspective for cooperation could be developed in the future. In addition, Commissioner Michel explored these issues further with the Minister for Science, Technology and the Environment Fernando Gónzalez on Saturday.

Later on Saturday, Commissioner Michel is due to meet with Executive Secretary of the Council of Ministers Mr. Carlos Lage.
