Sumario: 12 October 2007, Brussels - Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), is deeply concerned at the deterioration of relations between the North and the South of Sudan and made the following statement:
"I am deeply concerned at the deterioration of relations between the North and the South of Sudan and the recent announcement made by the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) to suspend its participation in the Government of National Unity, which is one of the fundamental achievements of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).
The European Union is deeply attached to the unity of Sudan and strongly supports the CPA. At this critical moment, when the European Union is about to launch a military operation in Chad and the Central African Republic and the Hybrid Force is being put in place in order to bring peace and stability back to Darfur, I call on the parties to fully implement, with the support of the international community, the provisions of the Agreement, which is of fundamental importance for the future of
Sudan."
