Sumario: 26 July 2007, Geneva - Explanation of Position by Mr. Gonçalo Silvestre, Attaché, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Portugal, on behalf of the European Union, at United Nations ECOSOC Commission for Social Development
Mr. Chairman,
The European Union attaches great importance to Social issues, the situation of the various social groups and to the work of the Commission for Social Development. In its resolution 60/2, the General Assembly agreed by consensus to add 5 additional priority areas for the implementation of the World Programme of Action, namely globalization, ICTs, HIV/AIDS, Armed Conflict and Intergenerational Issues. And, in this regard, requested the Commission for Social Development at its forty-fifth session
to elaborate a supplement to the World Programme of Action.
Mr. Chairman,
All Member States had participated in good faith in the negotiations of this Supplement. Throughout the process all partners had shown flexibility and have compromised in order to achieve what in our opinion is a good document. The EU recognizes that one Member State had disassociated from consensus on 1 of the paragraphs (op2) of the Supplement at the time of its adoption by the Commission for Social Development, and we would expect the same course of action in ECOSOC.
In this regard, Mr. Chairman it is with regret and surprise that the European Union learned yesterday that this Supplement is going to be submitted to a vote.
