Timor-Leste: EU Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner welcomes peaceful development of Parliamentary elections

Sumario: 2 July 2007, Brussels - Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy, Benita Ferrero-Waldner was satisfied with the peaceful development of the Parliamentary elections in Timor-Leste: "According to the first preliminary statement by our Election Observation Mission, headed by MEP Javier Pomés, these elections, as the previous presidential elections in April and May this year, were held peacefully with a high turnout and were reasonably well-administered by the national authorities despite the challenging environment. The Timorese democracy will be strengthened by these two elections: the Timorese people have sent a strong message that they want to choose their future peacefully and democratically."

The EU EOM Preliminary Statement, released today, said: "The Timorese people have chosen for the first time, in a democratic manner and in a generally peaceful atmosphere their representatives in Parliament".

The two consecutive elections are an important step for the consolidation of the Timorese institutions and the stabilization of the country. Credible elections will give the newly elected Parliament the legitimacy which is needed to overcome the recent crises and bring the country back on the path to sustainable development and poverty reduction.

The European Union has strongly supported the electoral process in Timor-Leste. It has deployed an Election Observation Missions to observe both the presidential and parliamentary elections and thus to enhance the credibility of the voting outcome. It has provided financial assistance for the organisation of the elections amounting to €1.5 million out of the institutional capacity building programme under the 9th European Development Fund.
