EU Commission and IAEA meet to reinforce mutual cooperation

Sumario: EU Commission and IAEA meet to reinforce mutual cooperation (19 January 2007: Brussels)

The High Level Liaison Committee for the implementation of nuclear safeguards between the European Commission and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) met yesterday in Vienna to discuss nuclear safeguards. Parties reviewed principal matters in relation to the implementation of safeguards in the EU and agreed to strengthen their cooperation on the basis of their respective roles. This will reinforce the effectiveness of mutual action, thereby contributing to the highest standards of nuclear safety, security and non-proliferation and help such high standards to be observed internationally.

The High Level Liaison Committee meeting was co-chaired by Mr Olli Heinonen, Deputy Director General of the IAEA, and Mr Dominique Ristori, Deputy Director General of the European Commission's Directorate General for Energy and Transport. The current German EU Presidency, as well as the previous and future Presidencies, Finland and Portugal, were also represented in the EU delegation.

The re-launch of this High Level Liaison Committee coincides with last week's presentation by the European Commission of its key proposals for an "Energy Policy for Europe", which will be discussed by the Heads of State and Government at the next Spring European Council of 8 March. As highlighted in the European Commission's proposals, reinforced cooperation with the IAEA constitutes an important step towards promoting non-proliferation, nuclear safety and security, which are key priorities of the EU's external energy policy for the forthcoming years.

The next meeting of the High Level Liaison Committee is planned for the second semester of 2007.
