Sumario: EU Presidency General Statement - UN African Institute for Prevention of Crime and Treatment of Offenders (17 November 2006: New York)

General Statement on behalf of the European Union by Mr. Janne Jokinen, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of Finland to the United Nations, 61st Session of the UN General Assembly; III Committee, Agenda Item 98: United Nations African Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (A/C.3/61/L.14/Rev.1), New York

Mr. Chairman,

I have the honour to speak on behalf of the European Union.

The Acceding Countries Bulgaria and Romania, the Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia, as well as Ukraine and Moldova align themselves with this declaration.

Mr. Chairman,

The European Union attaches great importance to the careful consideration, in accordance with established procedures, of draft resolutions brought before the General Assembly. This applies also to draft resolution A/C.3/61/L.14/Rev.1 on the United Nations African Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders.

The European Union is ready to join consensus on this resolution. We would ask, however, that when considering this resolution at future sessions of the General Assembly, it return to being an initiative of the African Group. We look forward to close cooperation with the African Group and other interested delegations on this issue at the next session of the General Assembly.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.

* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
