Sumario: EU Commission allocates €700,000 for flood victims in Suriname (Brussels: 2 June 2006)
The Commission has already funded rapid response assistance in the immediate aftermath of the floods. This was in the form of food parcels and hygiene kits sent on 14 May from pre-positioned stocks through PADRU (the Pan American Disaster Response Unit) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, based in Panama. The hygiene kits were distributed in partnership with the Suriname Red Cross to 20,000 people.
An expert from the Humanitarian Aid department undertook an assessment mission from 13-17 May, in co-ordination with the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Co-ordination team (UNDAC).
Following this assessment, the funding decision taken will cover:
- health actions to tackle malaria and diarrhoea in the affected areas;
- water and sanitation, as rivers are contaminated
- emergency food supplies following substantial livestock and crop losses
- kitchen sets and hygiene kits.
