
Sumario: EU Commissioner Fischer Boel participates in 33rd Conference of Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) (21 November 2005: Rome)
Mariann Fischer Boel, Member of the European Commission responsible for Agriculture and Rural Development, attended the 33rd session of the FAO Conference in Rome, where she addressed the plenary meeting on Monday 21 November 2005. In her speech, the Commissioner underlined the recent strengthening of EC-FAO cooperation (resulting from the signature of a Strategic Partnership Agreement in September 2004) and also the importance of EU's contribution to Overseas Development Assistance (ODA). She also reiterated EU's commitment to the Doha Round. In that respect she stressed it was crucial to give a bigger stake to developing countries in the global trade and to ensure that it is a true Development Round. She also insisted on the need for realism and balance in the negotiations and assured of EU's full commitment to a successful outcome of the Hong Kong Ministerial. She concluded that the FAO and other partners could count on EU's continuous contribution and support in the struggle to help the poor and hungry.
