The EU at the UN Summit

Sumario: The EU at the UN Summit (12 September 2005: New York)

Why would you want to know what the European Union thinks about the UN Summit?
Here are two good reasons:

1) The EU is the UN's biggest financial backer. EU Member States provide 38% of the UN regular budget and, together with the European Commission, they account for 50% of voluntary contributions to UN funds and programmes.

2) The European Union (the European Commission and Member States) is the world's biggest aid donor, responsible for 55% of all development aid.

And then there is the EU's role as a peacebuilder through actions throughout the world ranging through peacekeeping, reconstruction, institution building and support for fledgling democracies.

The President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, is scheduled to attend the UN World Summit 2005 in New York on 14-15 September. He will be accompanied by Commissioner for External Releations, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, and Development and Humanitarian Aid Commissioner, Louis Michel.

Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner will be in New York from 13th to 21th September. She speaks English, German, Spanish, and French.

In addition to the UN Summit, she is available for interview on the whole range of international meetings taking place in the margins of UN General Assembly. She has just returned from Afghanistan, and is happy to comment on the elections (18 September) where she has deployed an election observer mission. She will also participate in the Sri Lanka co-chairs meeting (19 September) and will attend the Middle East Quartet meeting (20th September).

Her bilateral meetings will include Ukraine, Egypt, Israel, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kygyzstan, Kazakstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Ethiopia as well as Human Rights NGOs, and EU meetings with UNSG Kofi Annan, with the US, China, Japan, Russia, Canada, Rio Group, Gulf Co operation Council, Non-Aligned Movement, China and the Palestinian Authority and Israel. She will also attend a Ministerial Meeting with the Lebanon chaired Secretary of State Rice.

Commissioner Michel will attend the round table on "Science, Technology and the Millenium Development Goals", the Mini Summit on Burundi and a Policy Dialogue on Poverty-Environment Partnership. He will also host a meeting with NGOs and will meet the Heads of all UN Agencies. He is available for interview in French, English and Dutch.
