Sumario: July 29, 2005: Zimbabwe - Restrictive measures against certain persons (Brussels)
The Council adopted today1 a decision updating the list of persons subject to restrictive measures in Zimbabwe to take account of the recent human rights violations.
The decision, which implements common position 2004/161/CFSP, adds 6 new names to the list that comprises now a total of 126 individuals.
Those measures, first introduced in February 2002, consist in a ban on entry into the territory of the EU member states and a freeze on financial assets. An embargo on the supply of arms and equipment intended for military operations is also imposed.
On 18 July the EU condemned the actions of the Zimbabwean government in the context of "Operation Murambatsvina", which included forcible demolitions of houses and internal displacement of persons. The EU called on the Zimbabwean government to put an end to that operation.
The updated list will be published in the Official Journal of the EU L 200 of 30 July 2005.
(On this issue, please see also press release 11493/1/05 of 28 July containing a declaration by the EU presidency).
1 The decision was taken by written procedure.
