The European Commission has revised the European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR) programming and the annual work programme for 2004 to reflect an increase in budget of €26.625 million and to amend some of the priorities contained in the earlier programme, as well as adding new ones.
The European Commission has decided to increase the EIDHR budget by €26.625 million to a total of €132.625 million. The distribution of this significant increase is as follows:
Two new themes have been added:
- Support measures for victims of human rights abuses: € 7 million.
- Pilot project for an experts network for conflict prevention: €1.125 million.
The following two themes have received extra budget:
- Support to development and consolidation of democracy and the rule of law, and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms: increased from €93 million to €110.5 million.
- Support for the activities of the international criminal tribunals and the setting-up of the International Criminal Court: increased from €6 million to €7 million.
