EUROPE DAY 2004: OVER $25,000.00 RAISED FOR ADOPT-A-MINEFIELD

At the annual Europe Day Reception on May 10, 2004 in New York City, hosted by the European Commission's Delegation to the UN, a silent auction of mural art by artists from most of the recently enlarged European Union's Member States (as well as candidate countries) raised over $25,000.00 for the evening's beneficiary, Adopt-A-Minefield (http://www.landmines.org).

At the reception, host Ambassador John B. Richardson said that with the addition of the ten new members who joined the EU on May 1st, "we are within reach of something of huge, historical importance - a Europe, united of its own free will, in which all citizens can enjoy a life of dignity, their human rights respected, their leaders chosen at the ballot box, with the opportunity for economic advancement that open markets bring, and with security, which comes from a functioning social safety net."

Others who joined in the formal program were UN deputy Secretary General Louise Frechette, who emphasized the growing partnership between the enlarging EU and the United Nations; and CBS' Mike Wallace of "60 Minutes", who spoke on behalf of Adopt-A-Minefield and graphically reminded the gathering just how insidious, deadly and expensive to eradicate mines are, despite costing, in many cases, just a few dollars each to produce.

Attractively displayed around the large atrium space adjacent to the Dahesh Museum in midtown, the art, comprising paintings, photography, lithographs and drawings, was curated by Mr. Stephen Farthing of the New York Academy of Art.

Of the 23 works on display, 15 sold, including an original piece donated by Christo and Jeanne-Claude (representing Bulgaria). The proceeds from the art sales, combined with a contribution from the Dahesh Museum (10% of all museum shop sales on the evening) and from a Young Diplomat's event to celebrate Europe Day, made for a total contribution of $25,439.00 to Adopt-A-Minefield.

"Adopt-A-Minefield and the United Nations Association of the USA were pleased and honored to partner with the European Commission in celebrating Europe Day. The funds raised from the silent auction will help save lives, clear minefields, and assist survivors of landmine accidents regain their lives. This was a wonderful way to celebrate the expansion of the EU and the ongoing commitment of European nations to helping make this world mine-safe," said Ambassador William H. Luers, Chair and President of the United Nations Association of the USA and member of Adopt-A-Minefield's Board of Governors.
