Sumario: July 27, 2001: Statement by Mr. Jean-Paul Charlier, Representative of Belgium, on behalf of the European Union. Administrative Committee on Coordination
Mr. Chairman,
Allow me to address you on behalf of the European Union. The Central and Eastern European Countries associated with the European Union - Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia -, the other associated countries Cyprus, Malta and Turkey, and the EFTA country which is a member of the European Economic Area, Norway, endorse this statement.
The European Union welcomes the stepping up of dialogue between ECOSOC and the Administrative Committee on Coordination, as reflected in regular reports on ACC proceedings, subject briefings and written notes. We also appreciate institutions' support for the work of ECOSOC technical commissions and the ACC's involvement in preparations for meetings to follow up major United Nations conferences. Such interaction between the ACC and ECOSOC is essential if the latter is to play its part in the
coordination of the various funds, programmes and specialist agencies.
Reform of the ACC and coordination machinery
The European Union welcomes the initiation of a reform of the ACC machinery and will be very interested to hear executive heads' views as to the practical results already achieved or anticipated from the reforms embarked upon, particularly as regards achievement of the various objectives pursued in setting up the High-Level Committee on Programmes and the High-Level Committee on Management and in establishing a single secretariat co-located in New York and Geneva.
Preparation for and implementation of major conferences
The European Union is aware that preparing for and following up major conferences increases the need for coordination in order to achieve the ambitious goals set by the international community and thus raises Member States' expectations of the various coordination arrangements. It welcomes the special efforts made by the Administrative Committee on Coordination to ensure effective monitoring of implementation of the Millennium Declaration, as well as the contribution made by various bodies to
preparations for the International Conference on Financing for Development. The Union would also like to know executive heads' views on:
