EU Presidency declaration on the Annan Nobel Peace Prize

Sumario: October 16, 2001: Declaration by the Presidency of the European Union on the occasion of the award of the Nobel Peace Prize jointly to the United Nations Organisation and to its Secretary-General, Kofi Annan (Brussels)

The European Union would express its warmest congratulations on the occasion of the award of the Nobel Peace Prize jointly to the United Nations Organisation and to the United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi ANNAN.

The Nobel Peace Prize underlines once more the vital contribution of the United Nations Organisation and its Secretary-General in the search for solutions to the conflicts and instability of all kinds afflicting the planet and in the promotion of universal values.

The European Union, now as in the past, remains firmly attached to the multilateral approach developed by the United Nations to meet the numerous challenges confronting the international community in an increasing number of areas.

The European Union pays tribute to the exemplary role played by Secretary-General Kofi ANNAN since his accession to this post. His many qualities and his unfailing commitment to the service of the United Nations justify the distinction awarded to him today.

The Central and Eastern European countries associated with the European Union, the associated countries Cyprus, Malta and Turkey and the EFTA countries Iceland and Liechtenstein, members of the European Economic Area, endorse this declaration.
