Sumario: July 1, 2002: Weekly Highlights. Danish Presidency of European Union launched today, UNMIBH mandate renewal.
Welcome to the official e-mail alert service of the European Union at the United Nations.
This is a message from Ellen Margrethe Løj, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Denmark to the United Nations in New York.
"From 1 July 2002 to 31 December 2002, Denmark holds the Presidency of the European Union.
Denmark will, as President of the EU, continue to work actively to promote the UN target of 0.7% of gross national product being used for development aid. It will do so inter alia in connection with the World Summit on Sustainable Development and follow-up to the UN conferences on Financing For Development and on Least Developed Countries. At the Monterrey Conference on Financing for Development in March 2002, EU countries have already committed themselves to increase the EU's total aid to
0.39% of gross national product by 2006.
On the official Danish EU Presidency site: www.eu2002.dk, you will find schedules for Presidency meetings, the work programme, news, policy statements etc. You will also be able to sign up for news subscriptions or participate in on-line debates. In a major news development, the Danish Presidency of the EU has called a meeting among EU ambassadors in Brussels today in order to discuss possible steps to be taken in the light of the US veto on the renewal of the UN Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNMIBH) mandate for a further six months and the technical roll-over of the mandate for 72 hours to give time for further negotiation.
Denmark's Foreign Minister, Per Stig Møller, said: "I deeply regret this dramatic step that threatens UN peace operations in general. Countries that support the International Criminal Court and are actively engaged in UN peacekeeping have been placed in a difficult dilemma. I hope members of the Security Council will adhere to the Secretary-General's strong appeal and find a solution within the coming days."
