Welcome to the official e-mail alert service of the European Union at the United Nations.

After the EU-US summit in Washington DC yesterday, the EU, UN, US and Russia agreed to work towards holding a meeting in the early summer to resume the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians. Please click here for the summary and full transcript of the Quartet press conference.

At the EU-US summit itself, EU President Aznar remarked that "the joint effort by the EU and the US in the fight against terrorism is even greater". EC President Prodi pledged the European Commission would "do its utmost to support these efforts to secure a lasting peace in the Middle East".

After the end of the inter-Congolese dialogue meeting at Sun City, the EU asked all Congolese parties to act responsibly and show a willingness to compromise and abide by the framework established by the Lusaka Agreements and relevant UN resolutions.

During the past few days, issues of further interest include:

* The EU made a statement at the UN Security Council welcoming the elections in East Timor and strongly supporting the UN peacekeeping and supportive role after independence.

* The European Commission granted €10 million for victims of drought in Tajikistan; an additional € 20 million in humanitarian aid for Afghanistan; and € 0.5 million assistance for rehabilitation and reconstruction after the 2001 earthquakes in El Salvador. Almost € 12 million was also allocated for Laos, Burkina Faso, ECHO flight operations, Somali refugees and Burmese refugees.

* EC Ambassador Carlos Trojan made an intervention at the UN Economic Commission for Europe on the information society.

* Earlier last month, the EU made several statements on the Law of the Sea, including the protection and preservation of the Marine environment as well as the need to enhance ocean management and regional cooperation.
