Welcome to the official e-mail alert service of the European Union at the United Nations.
The EU in the past few days made statements at the UN Security Council on Kosovo and Afghanistan. In its statement on Kosovo, the EU said it remains committed to providing economic and political support to the province and is by far the biggest contributor to its reconstruction. Full details are available at: http://www.eu-un.europa.eu/articles/en/article_1252_en.htm Concerning Afghanistan, the EU supports the proposed mandate and basic operating principles for the UN Mission in Afghanistan. The EU believes that Afghanistan should have responsible and representative government with a mandate periodically renewed by the Afghan people; commitment to political pluralism; respect for human rights and the rights of minorities; friendly relations with its neighbors; and commitment to poppy eradication and prevention of drug trafficking: http://www.eu-un.europa.eu/articles/en/article_1254_en.htm
At the latest round of discussions on a Framework Convention on Tobacco Control at the World Health Organization, the EU said it is working to make the Convention a real tool in its fight against tobacco consumption. The EU is working with other UN members to ban tobacco advertising, protect people from exposure to passive smoking and to restrict duty free sales and illicit trade of tobacco products. Please see: http://www.eu-un.europa.eu/articles/en/article_1247_en.htm
