This week, EU High Representative Javier Solana addressed the UN Security Council in New York about the EU's deep engagement with Africa. * In Geneva, the EU gave its priorities in the run-up to the UN Summit for Sustainable Development at the UN Economic Commission for Europe.
* After 11 years during which formal development assistance to the Sudan had been suspended, the EU announced it intends a progressive normalization of relations with that country. The Commission also approved EUR 120 million in development aid and EUR 32 million in humanitarian assistance for 2002 for the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
* The EU suggested in Vienna that the IAEA could benefit from introducing the euro as the sole currency in its assessment system, as was already the case with UNIDO.
