Sumario: February 27, 2002: EU Commission welcomes ILO World Commission (Brussels)
Pascal Lamy, Commissioner for Trade, expressed today his support for the ILO creation of a World Commission to consider the social dimension of globalization. The World Commission will help us, the international Community, understand the complex interface between globalization, trade liberalization and social development, in particular the promotion of core labor standards. My hope is that we will then be better equipped to harness globalization and maximize the economic and social
benefits of globalization and trade, Pascal Lamy said.
Commissioner Lamy noted that it would be important for all relevant players governments, international organizations, unions, employers and civil society- to contribute to the work of the World Commission.
The World Commission on the social Dimension of Globalization has been created on the suggestion of ILO DG Somavia, following the agreement of all ILO members' governments and social partners- at the November 2001 meeting of the ILO. The World Commission is mandated with the task of analyzing the social dimension of globalization, and comprises 18 internationally eminent persons, co-chaired by Finnish President Mrs. Tarja Halonen, and Tanzanian President William Mkapa. The World Commission is
due to report to the ILO its findings and recommendations by March 2003.
