Summary: 13 November 2009, Brussels - European Commissioner Stavros Dimas is to participate in an international ministerial meeting on 15-17 November to prepare for the Copenhagen climate conference.
Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas will take part in an international ministerial meeting on 15-17 November to prepare next month's crucial UN climate change conference in Copenhagen. The informal meeting of some 40 invited ministers from around the world is being hosted in Copenhagen by Danish climate and energy minister Connie Hedegaard, who will also chair the UN conference on 7-18 December.
The EU's goal for the conference is to reach global agreement on an ambitious climate regime for the period after 2012, when key provisions of the Kyoto Procotol will expire, as well as on 'fast-start' financial assistance to help developing countries strengthen their capacity to tackle climate change over the next three years. Discussions at the ministerial meeting are expected to centre on the key elements a Copenhagen agreement must include, how to get a deal on global emission reductions
and on financing for developing countries, what form the Copenhagen agreement should take, and the focus of the high-level segment that will take place at the end of the conference.
