Somalia: EUHR Solana comments on election of new President

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), made the following comments after the election of the new Somali President, Sheikh Sharif Ahmed:

"I welcome the election of the new President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed. This elections brings hope for lasting peace and stability in Somalia.

All parties should continue working for reconciliation. The establishment of the new government of national unity will be important in that respect.

The European Union is committed to continue to support this process, in particular through the African Union and AMISOM and to maintain the cooperation with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General Ould Abdallah."
