EU Presidency Statement - United Nations Peacebuilding Commission: Informal meeting on Burundi

Summary: 26 January 2009, New York - Statement on behalf of the European Union by Mr. Karel Komárek, Minister Counsellor, Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic to the United Nations, at the Peacebuilding Commission Informal Country-Specific Meeting on Burundi

Thank you, Mr. Chairman,

First of all, I would like, on behalf of the EU countries, to thank you, Mr. Chairman, for your written report and for the comprehensive and very interesting oral communication.

We thank you for your active participation in the meeting in Bujumbura. We are convinced that the direct contacts with the government, opposition, civil society and all other stakeholders are crucial for the PBC activities.

We welcome the outcome of the meeting of the Group of Special Envoys and particularly the adoption of the Bujumbura Declaration. In this context, we would like to recognize the eminent role that has been played by the facilitators and wise understanding of all parties that were able to reach the agreement.

We were very pleased to read in your report that the peace process had reached a point of no return and that all actors were committed to implementing the outstanding issues of the 4 December Declaration of the Great Lakes Heads of State.

It is imperative for all parties, that the momentum is not lost and that the adopted documents are fully implemented. We are in favour of an active participation of the Peacebuilding Commission in this process. We support your conclusions and suggestion for the future actions of the Peacebuilding Commission in Burundi.

We are convinced that the PBC can play a vital role in monitoring the progress in the implementation of the Strategic Framework for the Peacebuilding in Burundi, in supporting the DDR and in helping with the preparation of the national elections to be held in 2010.

I thank you, Mr. Chairman.
