Somalia: EUHR Solana welcomes progress with ceasefire

Summary: 27 October 2008: Brussels - Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), issued a statement today welcoming the agreement reached over the weekend on implementing the ceasefire agreement between the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia and the Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia and their intention to set up a Somali Unity Government:

"I welcome the agreement reached this weekend on modalities for implementing the cessation of armed confrontation between the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia (TFG) and the Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia (ARS). I also welcome the intention of the parties to establish a Somali Unity Government.

This agreement is an important step forward. When implemented, it will improve security in Somalia and create conditions for a political settlement in line with the Djibouti Agreement of 19 August 2008 and the Transitional Federal Charter. Only an inclusive political process will bring durable peace to Somalia, and I call on all Somalis to rally behind the TFG and the ARS and their endeavour to achieve this.

I also commend the UN Special Representative for Somalia, Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, for his tireless efforts in this process."
