Afghanistan: EUHR Solana congratulates Police Commissioner Vittrup on appointment as Head of EU Police Mission

Summary: 3 October 2008, Brussels - Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the CFSP, congratulates Police Commissioner Kai VITTRUP on his appointment as the new Head of the EU Police Mission in Afghanistan

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), congratulated today Police Commissioner Kai VITTRUP who has been appointed as the new Head of the EU Police Mission in Afghanistan. He succeeds Brigadier-General Jürgen Scholz as from 16 October 2008. Javier SOLANA made the following comments:

"His excellent policing background, his international experience and the responsibilities he had until now as Police Commissioner in the United Nations Mission in the Sudan (UNMIS) makes him most suitable for this position. He can count on my full support and that of the European Union as a whole in the accomplishment of his new duties.

Through EUPOL Afghanistan, the EU is bringing a key contribution to the establishment of a professional police service in Afghanistan and therefore to bringing Rule of Law and peace and stability to this country. Afghanistan still faces considerable challenges. Hard work, patience and determination will be fundamental to meet those challenges.

I would like to express my gratitude to Brigadier-General Jürgen Scholz for his dedication and work as Head of the EU Police Mission in Afghanistan."
