Summary: 23 September 2008, Brussels - The European Union calls on the Sudanese authorities to put an immediate end to the military operations which started a few days ago in Darfur. It condemns the use of white aircraft in these operations, which is deliberately intended to create confusion with United Nations aircraft.
The European Union is particularly concerned that humanitarian aid has stopped in the areas concerned, in particular Jebel Marra.
The European Union calls on all the parties unconditionally to honour their cease-fire commitments, and to abide by international humanitarian law, Human Rights Conventions and the resolutions of the Security Council. In particular, they must ensure that humanitarian workers and UNAMID have free access to these areas, and that UNAMID is free to carry out its civilian protection mandate.
The Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, Armenia and Georgia align themselves with this declaration.
* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process
