EU Presidency Statement following the death of two World Food Programme (WFP) employees in Somalia

Summary: 18 August 2008, Brussels - The Presidency of the Council of the European Union expresses its indignation at the death of two United Nations employees who worked for the World Food Programme (WFP) in Somalia.

The Presidency of the Council of the Union European strongly condemns the violence against aid workers and calls for the immediate end to these intolerable acts. It reaffirms its commitment to respect for international humanitarian law and the safety of humanitarian personnel.

The Presidency of the Council of the European Union conveys its condolences to the victims' families and loved ones. It reiterates its invitation to all parties to double their efforts to swiftly sign the Djibouti Agreement initialled on 9 June between the Transitional Federal Government and the Alliance for Reliberation of Somalia with a view to implementing the cease fire and establishing lasting peace in Somalia.
