EU humanitarian aid for Tajikistan

Summary: July 30, 2001: Commission adopts Euro 10 million humanitarian aid plan for Tajikistan (Brussels)

The European Commission has adopted a €10 million global plan to help meet humanitarian needs in Tajikistan. This decision will enable ECHO, through partner organizations working in the field, to provide assistance to the most vulnerable population groups throughout 2001. The funds will be channeled by the Humanitarian Aid Office ECHO which comes under the responsibility of Commissioner Poul Nielson.

The people of Tajikistan have suffered significantly over the past seven years as a result of an ongoing civil war. The situation has been exacerbated in 2000/2001 by a severe drought that struck central Asia. As a direct result, the decline in agricultural production has caused serious economic problems, major food shortages and malnutrition affecting many young children. More than 60% of the Tajik population depends on agriculture and 17% of children under five suffer from acute malnutrition. In addition, the current spread of infectious diseases is increasing the risk of epidemics.

As a humanitarian response to the most vulnerable population groups, ECHO funding is being allocated to a number of different sectors involving food aid projects, access to primary health care, nutritional support and supplies of drinking water.

From 1992 to 2001 ECHO has allocated over €122 million to Tajikistan, making it by far the largest donor of humanitarian aid to the country.
