EUHR Solana welcomes appointment of Bassolé as Chief Mediator for Darfur

Summary: 1 July 2008, Brussels - Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), welcomed the appointment of the current Minister of Foreign Affairs of Burkina Faso, Djibrill Bassolé, as Joint Chief Mediator for Darfur.

Mr. Solana endorsed the United Nations and African Union joint decision to appoint Djibrill Bassolé to the position. Mr. Bassolé's extensive experience will facilitate the promotion of a political solution to the complex crisis in Darfur. He will be able to build upon the important contributions made by Jan Eliasson and Salim Ahmed Salim towards achieving sustainable peace in Darfur.

Mr. Solana reiterated that the EU is willing to support Mr. Bassolé in his task to address the crisis in Darfur which continues to cause suffering to millions of civilians.
