Summary: 15 May 2008, Brussels - Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), issued the following statement today welcoming the Arab League mediation initiative in Beirut:
"I welcome the initiative taken by the Arab League in Beirut yesterday. This is a demonstration of solidarity with Lebanon and efforts such as these are to be praised. I am hopeful that we can look forward to a constructive dialogue and a return to normality.
I reiterate the European Union's full support for Lebanon, for its legitimate government led by Fouad Siniora, and for its security services.
The EU will continue to stand by Lebanon and the Lebanese people in these very difficult days."
